Re: Jimmy Greaves in intensive care
That's a great piece Eddie.... love this bit...

Miserable goal celebrations — the finger to the lips — just confuse him and as a spectator he enjoys other sports more. The nuances of a good Test match, that unique blend of skill and brute physicality that can be found in rugby. For someone who played through the Ron Harris era, Jimmy — like many of his age — finds football’s play-acting a turn-off.

He tells a story about somehow leaving the villainous Harris flat out with a late tackle. It was a bad one and he thought he could be sent off. Harris was still lying there when the referee called Jimmy over. With that, he sprung up and ran to the referee. ‘Don’t send him off, I’m fine, it was an accident,’ Harris pleaded. Jim recalls that as the ref put his book away, the defender known as Chopper turned to him with an evil look in his eye. ‘You b******, I thought,’ said Jim. ‘I know why you want me to stay on.’

‘I won’t tell you where I played the rest of the game,’ he added, ‘but I became very good friends with our goalkeeper.’

Ha Ha Ha!!

Agree. I use to think the same thing. You wouldn't have thought he was the greastest goalscorer we have ever produced.

I love the story of Jimmy in a cat rally in south America upon hearing about MOORo being arrested and secured in a hotel room .

Drove to the hotel and climbed in to have a beer with his pld ate.

I can't remember if it was on the internet or TV.

Plus, I'll never forget that episode of S&G when Margaret Thatcher tried to introduce I.D cards to football and Colin Moynihan was sports minister...On live T.V at 1.30pm he has a ventriloquists puppet on his knee and shoved a red card right up it's backside to tell everyone what he thought about the scheme!

St.John was pissing himself laughing...even more than usual...

Greaves and Gilzean, were deadly for Spurs, Jimmy got the goals on the floor and Alan Gilzean, got all the headed goals

FWIW, I don't have a problem with him being praised. Never saw him play obviously, but I've seen plenty of videos - he was obviously brilliant.

Goals to games ratio he is surely the best ever, I just prefer Bobby Charlton. The likes of Rooney obviously aren't fit to be mentioned in the same sentence.

Them again when I was young I thought Bobby Moore scored the hat-trick in the WC Final, so what do I know?
